Spanish Speech

November 17, 2003 - The Spanish translation was specially created for those operating THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ pinball machine in Hispanic communities in the United States or in Spanish-speaking countries. Activation of the speech is as simple as changing ROM chips.

Much of the Spanish speech is taken directly from THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ movie soundtracks. Pinball play phrases such as “Triple jackpot”, “Gollum has the ring”, and “You've gathered all 7 dwarf rings” were recorded by actors in Spanish specifically for this Stern game. The Spanish speech, therefore, tracks the English version.

“Major American businesses today realize the importance of appealing to Hispanic audiences and consumers,” Gary Stern said, explaining the reasoning behind making Spanish speech available for Stern games. “Advertising is aimed at Hispanic markets. Hispanic TV stations are more and more important. CBS aired in prime time the Latin Music Awards. When you call to check your credit card or utility bill, you are asked if you want English or Spanish. We think including Spanish speech is important to the future appeal and growth of our product.”

Stern Pinball has regularly translated for its pinball machines dot matrix display wording, instruction cards and manual supplement into various languages for its export markets, including Spanish. Stern suggests these Spanish translations also be used in American Hispanic locations.

The Spanish speech chips for THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ pinball will be available through download from Stern Pinball's website www.sternpinball.com or from Stern distributors. The zipped website file will offer a Spanish dot matrix chip, a Spanish CPU chip, and five sound chips. The website will also have Spanish instruction cards, and manual supplements can be acquired from Stern distributors.

In addition, THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ pinball machine operates with Stern's Tournament Pinball System (ToPS™).
